We have hit that point in oil markets when suddenly, just like that, all the newsflow turns bearish. Better put “seems bearish”. First the shock news… FTC to approve XOM-PXD deal. Then the condition: Pioneer CEO Scott Sheffield cannot join ExxonMobil’s board because of anti-competitive collusion with OPEC. All this is as reported by the Wall Street Journal this evening. Knee jerk first thoughts: Very first thought? You have to suppress a wry smile. Never a dull moment in oil, nothing beats a shock press release. The most exciting press releases leave plenty to the imagination.
